Instructor Provided Materials tbd
Study Group Style Lecture, Seminar, Discussion, Activity, Extra Meetings
Description The Bildungsroman, or “Coming-of-Age” novel, traces the path a person travels in the quest for self development. It usually requires examining the moral, spiritual, psychological and social aspects of his life as the protagonist seeks to reconcile the essence of his inner self with his outer being, and the world. It is not solely a search for identity per se but rather an exploration and articulation of the process required to reach a fully-awakened adulthood.

In this study group, we will read a great many novels illustrating this quest for identity; the list represents numerous cultures, time periods, and unusual struggles. Each week we will discuss a different book, and there will be a rigid expectation that students will only attend if they have, in fact, read the book. There will also be written assignments, and the additional assignments of viewing at least two films individually.

Novels may include: Nectar in a Sieve (Kamala Markandaya), I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Maya Angelou), The Heart is A Lonely Hunter (Carson McCullers), A Separate Peace (John Knowles), The Chocolate War (Robert Cormier), The Chosen (Chaim Potok), Emma (Jane Austen), Pinocchio (Carlo Collodi), Memoirs of a Geisha (Arthur Golden), The Painted Bird (Jerzy Kosinski, In the Country of Men (Hisham Matar), Siddhartha (Hermann Hesse), David Copperfield (Charles Dickens), Zazoo (Richard Mosher), Speak (Laurie Halse Anderson), and The Woman Warrior (Maxine Hong Kingston). However, these titles are definitely subject to change.

Please note that themes in such novels frequently deal with topics for more mature readers: violence, sex, sodomy, rape, and psychological abuse, etc… and guide your choices accordingly. I will not be willing to “water down” content in this course.

The students will be expected to read the materials, keep a reading log with entries for each book ,and bring the assigned book to class on the week when it is to be discussed. We will try to finish a book each week, and promptness in class attendance will be crucial if we are to reach that goal.

Target audience would be upper middle school/high school, with the caveat that students should be comfortable with the topics being discussed aloud. Please contact Erica with any other concerns.

Description History of Cinema

The purpose of this study group is to help the student attain "Cultural Literacy" in film. We will discuss and see examples of different film genres such as Comedy, Thrillers, War (and Antiwar) movies, Westerns, Romance, Science Fiction, Film Noir and Drama. Most of these films have appeared on many of the “Top 100 films” lists. We will be watching the movies and discussing them in study group time.

Considering the age of the students, I have avoided R rated films. Students and their parents can feel free to skip any movie that they are uncomfortable with.

Here are the films I am considering:

Comedy –

The General(Buster Keaton), Something Funny Happened on the Way to the Forum, City Lights, Son of Paleface (Bob Hope), Big (Tom Hanks), Duck Soup, Love and Death, The Court Jester;

Thrillers:

North by Northwest, Notorious, Rear Window, Vertigo, Witness for the Prosecution, Rebecca, Charade, Raiders of the Lost Ark;

War and antiwar movies:

Bridge Over the River Kwai, Friendly Persuasion, Das Boot, Glory, The Great Escape, Dr. Strangelove;

Westerns:

The Searchers, High Noon, Silverado;

Romance: The Philadelphia Story, Days of Heaven, Gone with the Wind, Some Like it Hot, It Happened One Night;

Science fiction:

The Day the Earth Stood Still, 2001: a Space Odyssey, Close Encounters, ET;

Film Noir:

The Big Sleep, Casablanca, Double Indemnity, The Maltese Falcon;

Description Diplomacy is a board game, war game, and strategy game set in Europe in the era before the beginning of World War I. Diplomacy differs from most war games in several ways: All units move simultaneously, with players writing down their moves during a negotiation period, and all moves are revealed and put into effect simultaneously. All units are of equal strength, and combat resolution contains no element of randomness — no dice are rolled and no cards are shuffled. The result of a move depends on the support or opposition of the units in neighboring spaces, making social interaction and interpersonal skills, the formation and violation of alliances, and calculated lying and backstabbing, crucial parts of the game play.

The game ends when one player gains control of more than half of the continent, or by agreement among all surviving players.

The rules are convoluted. There is no luck. And, for many players, there is as much fun coming up with rationales (and story lines) for what is happening to them or because of them as there is in determining the moves themselves.

We will play the game – while trying to figure out how to play it better still. You may sign up on Wednesdays or Thursdays or both.

You steal towards the door and push it open to reveal a small room. A fire is crackling merrily in a fireplace, and four armchairs are set around an elaborate wooden table. A man is discovered sitting in one of the chairs, his hair wonderfully dark against his pale skin. Small pointed teeth protrude out of his mouth. "Welcome." He says quietly. "Do come in..."

Dragons and monsters...

Magic and kings...

Worlds to be saved...

Treasure to be gained...

The world of Dungeons and Dragons awaits you.

Dungeons and Dragons is a fun, interactive roleplaying game where you pretend to be a made-up character adventuring through a made-up world. But it's not all as childish as it seems - deadly monsters around every bend, and people who are not as they seem. Not intended for the faint of heart, it is a game of chance, and life and death.

Please note that if you join, you don't only come to study group when you want to. You have the first two weeks as an add/drop period. If you don't like D&D within that time, drop it by all means. But after that, you are stuck with us =K

Description I hope to at least partially construct this study group with the children as we go along and take the study group where the children's interests lead us. We will definitely start by looking at the history of fashion (how clothing used to look, how it changed, why). We will explore the politics of clothing. We will then spend a portion of the term looking at current designs and designers. After that if the girls are feeling creative, and I am feeling adventurous, they can create their own designs. I do not sew so I can't help them actually make anything, but they can draw their designs.

Instructor Provided Materials photocopied work such as background materials, literary criticism, and the like
Study Group Style Lecture, Discussion, Activity, Extra Meetings
Description The immigrant experience constitutes a central shaping force of American culture. Many of the myths which form an inherent part of the idea of America originate in the dreams and experiences of the millions who migrated from elsewhere to this country. While the phenomenon assumed its most massive proportions between 1800 and 1924, when some thirty-five million people arrived here, it continues today to be an important source of the diversity of our culture, adding both richness and tension to our daily lives.

The wealth of literature that relates the struggles of these immigrants is magnificent in scope and vision. While different national groups have been associated with different periods of immigration and specific themes, all of the works reveal the complexity of what it is to be an American and of the struggle to achieve the “American Dream”. Indeed, perhaps the most useful aspect to these narratives is to see just how diverse these dreams are, and to what extent the move to a new country makes the dream possible.

We will read from a great many sources ranging from government reports and census data to novels and autobiographies that present more lyrical and poignant tales of the immigrants’ lives. In reading works from writers of many backgrounds, the intent is to expose students to the commonalities and differences that people experienced; some of the differences rest with the nationalities or ethnicities of the immigrants themselves, but others are largely reflections of the time and places that became their new homes. In all likelihood, most of the class will be able to think about their own ancestors and what may have been their lot when first arriving here from their original countries. Perhaps it is obvious, but another aim of the class is to promote tolerance and curiosity about other ways of thinking and pursuing our own dreams and those of others.

We will look at the countries of origin, paying special attention to those conditions that prompted people to take such a risk for a new life. Therefore, there will be the need to use the internet and other sources to obtain pertinent background material. I would hope that we can see some documentary films as well as read, and to have at least one foreign-born visitor who can reflect upon personal experiences for the class.

There will be some writing and note-taking, but the bulk of the work lies in reading and discussing in class what we have read.

Possible writings may include either in part or in total: “This is an American” (Hector St. John de Crevecouer - 1789), The Interesting Narrative of Olandah Equiano ( Olandah Equiano -1789), The Book of Khalid ( Ameen Rihani – 1911), The Promised Land (Mary Antin - 1912) The Rise of David Levinsky (Abraham Cahan – 1917), My Antonia (Willa Cather – 1918), Syrian Yankee (Salom Rizk – 1943, Brown Girl, Brownstones ( Paule Marshall – 1960),The Fortunate Pilgrim (Mario Puzo – 1964), Eat a Bowl of Tea (Louis Chu – 1961), Barrio Boy (Ernesto Galarza - 1971), Anywhere But Here (Mona Simpson – 1987), Jasmine (Bharati Mukherjee – 1989), Lucy (Jamaica Kincaid – 1990), Dogeaters (Jessica Hagedorn – 1990), Typical American (Gish Jen – 1992), Arabian Jazz (Diana Abu-Jaber – 1993), Bint Arab (Evelyn Shakir – 1997), and The Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini - 2003).

Description Over the years, many authors have gone beyond writing a simple story and instead have established extensive timelines and cultures built either from our own or in a totally unrelated society. In this study group, we will explore a variety of these works and their histories, looking at them through the lenses of both Science Fiction and History.

Some likely authors to be included are Robert Heinlein, Cordwainer Smith, Gene Wolfe, Isaac Asimov, HG Wells, Jack London, David Brin, and Octavia Butler. We will also look at some works by "futurists" such as Alvin Toffler.

There will be a lot of reading in this course and some writing, as well.

As we begin the year, our focus will be the poets Catullus and Ovid, although other authors may also be read and discussed, according to student interest. Grammar review, as well as poetic devices, meter and the historical context for the poems, will also be a part of the study group. This is a group tutorial and students should plan on spending at least 5 hours a week at home.

Fees will depend on total number of students in the class(es): Some fees based in a 14 week semester: 5 students in 1 class = $224 each. 10 students (total) in 2 classes = $168 each.

Study Group Style Seminar
Description Programming is the art of getting a computer to do what you want it to do, when you want it to do it. The purpose of this study group is to get you on your way to being able to do just that. Exactly what we study, and what computer language or languages we use, will depend on what you want to be able to do, but just so you know, we shall not be doing game programming, as I have absolutely no experience in game programming. However, I am confident that the skills you develop in this study group will be useful for any sort of programming you want to do.

Topics I plan to cover include, but are not limited to: data types, objects, functions, iteration and recursion, string manipulation, graphic elements, GUI controls (menus, buttons, etc.), data models, and possibly some simple concurrent programming. Oh, yes, and debugging, since hardly anything works the first time, no matter how simple it ought to be.

Description People come in all sorts, to state the obvious! There is only one you in the whole universe! People are both uniquely unique and typically human at the same time. Many useful and insightful techniques exist to identify their, and more importantly your own, patterns of temperament, personality, strengths and challenges. We will explore several important ones of the many typlogies available, including Myers Briggs, but others as well. You will use these to consider your gifts and talents, your loves and passions, the kinds of things you bring to your work, a team, and the world. You will have a glimpse into the ways different people contribute different skills and abilities to any group effort. Such self-knowledge and other-knowledge enhances and can inform everything you do. You can use it to plan and accomplish a path through college, jobs and careers, business, great passions, volunteer work, and what your contribution to the world is and can be.
