| Description | *** THIS IS A TENTATIVE STUDY GROUP * Day, time and location subject to change. Participants will prepare for the MATHCOUNTS competition. Study group time will be spent learning new ways to solve challenging math problems. We will explore topics in mathematics such as number theory, geometry, counting & computation methods ("tricks"), problem solving strategies and more. There will be required homework each week. Please note that the style of this study group is "competitive." Students will receive feedback on their work and practice competitions. A team of 4 students will be chosen from study group members via a mock-MATHCOUNTS competition in study group in December/January. 4 additional students will be selected as "individual competitors". All 8 of these students will compete in the Chapter (regional) competition in early February. The official end of the MATHCOUNTS class will be just after the February Chapter competition. If the team scores high enough to go on to the State competition, class will continue to prepare the 4 team members plus 1 alternate for the State competition. In that case, the study group will end in March after the State competition. Students interested in competing on the team will need to be available for the MATHCOUNTS chapter competition in early February 2008 and the state competition in early March, exact dates TBD. Please see "Requirements" below for MATHCOUNTS rules about eligibility. Students who do not want to compete or are ineligible are still welcome to join the class. Additional meetings outside of study group time will be required in January, times and locations TBD depending on team members' and coaches' schedules.
