| Description | [What do you need to do to get into college beyond taking the SAT?! Just what is EA, ED (or even weirder...EDII) and is it something I should consider? How hard can it all be? Well...that all depends! This class will seek to demystify the process for students and their families by providing a realistic view of the college admissions process in the year 2008. Is it as hard to get into a college as we read in the newspapers? What are the options and just when do you have to start thinking about all this? Do you really need to apply to 20 colleges? Just who does that anyway? This class will answer all of those questions and more. Each week we will examine a different aspect of college admissions from how to pick a list of schools to visit and apply to, to the nuts and bolts of timetables and just what and when things are due. Topics including how to prepare for a college interview, who to pick to write your letters of recommendation and the importance of the student essay will all be examined. Ultimately the job of selecting schools and getting applications completed will rest with the student and secondarily the family, but this class will aim to provide guidance and reassurance and to help you to see that the college application process like every other step in your educational journey thus far is an opportunity for learning more about yourself and where you want to be. There is a school out there where every student can be happy, and you may not even know it's name yet!] | |

| Description | As literature continues to evolve, the classic works upon which our current literature is based become tougher to find and interpret in their context. (How's that for obscurity?) The same thing is true for the Movies we watch. We've got people churning out cartoons, books, video games, remade movies, and etc based on Movies that came out in the middle of the 20th century! Many of them are even in black and white because they Had To Be! Come join me in a study group that will be spent watching classic movies and sharing interesting facts about the movies themselves and the people who made them. I will decide the course content based upon consensus of my group attendees. I consider the ages and interests of participants in deciding what gets shown. I will not show slasher-type horror films because they disturb me. | |

Ideally, participants will read the newspaper daily. If participants want to get additional news from television or the radio, that is fine, but we will consistently use papers. We will discuss the news each week in an informal manner. We have deliberately chosen to have at least five different adults lead the study group, rotating weeks, so that the young participants get multiple points of view. We will can share some of those views with participants, but we won't impose them on anyone. Our goal is to treat topics like the 2008 election, major conflicts around the globe, climate change, energy costs, the economy and other subjects that arise. | Family Provided Materials | Something to take and keep notes in

| Study Group Style | Lecture, Discussion | |
| Description | Environmental Science 101. This topic has become enormously important to our future. Everyone should have a basic understanding of the planet Earth and how humans interact with it in order to understand (and act upon) public environmental policy. I am planning to teach this class in a multilevel manner. I will ask each student to choose either AP/honors level or introductory. Expectations for out of class work and reading/choice of text will be adjusted accordingly. While this course will not be as rigorous as my honors chemistry class, I will expect that students keep up with the assigned reading and be prepared to participate in discussions. There may be some student led discussion. Optional, but fun: There is a competition called Envirothon, with workshops and a state competition. If there are enough interested people we will form a team and make sure to include the relevant topics in the course of study. There is also a service component to the Envirothon, giving you a chance to "think globally, act locally". If we have a team, those members may have occasional activities which take place outside the usual time and place. THIS IS A PRELIMINARY PROPOSAL AND MAY BE EDITED IN THE FUTURE | |

We will work on a different photographic theme every two weeks, such as people, nature, and objects. We will work on lighting and composition as well as cropping and editing your art work and go on at least two field trips: Walden Pond and The DeCordova Museum. If there is enough interest, we could plan a day to meet at Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester. Each participant will have an opportunity to discuss and/or prepare a presentation about their favorite photographer. I will be presenting the works of Lewis Hines. I also plan to bring in some of my photography and old 35 mm equipment just for fun. If we are able to find the appropriate information, it would be nice if our study group could submit some entries to The Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards.

The books will likely be Chasing Vermeer (Balliett), Dave at Night (Levine--the author of Ella Enchanted), The City of Ember (DuPrau), Freaky Friday (Rodgers), Hatchet (Paulsen), Surviving the Applewhites (Tolan--about homeschoolers!), and one more if there is time. These books are all considered to be about 5th grade to 8th grade in both reading level and content. If your child has already read most of the books, please let me know and I'll finagle the list a bit. There are lots of great choices for kids at this level out there!

| Description | Svaroopa Yoga is a slow, meditative form of Hatha Yoga that focuses on the release of spinal tension to increase flexibility and relieve pain and stress. Familiar yoga poses are held with the support of blankets, pillows and other props, with emphasis on skeletal alignment, awareness and breathing. Svaroopa unravels the deep-seated layers of tension in your body and mind. This inner opening creates healing and personal transformation. This yoga study group is for all levels of experience. Those who practice other forms of yoga will find the Svaroopa style to be a relaxing and deepening addition to their practice. Those who are not familiar with yoga will discover that the poses are easy to learn and to do. And everyone will benefit from the core opening and release of tension we all hold without realizing it. Each time we meet, we will begin and end with Shavasana, a relaxation pose with guided awareness that sets the stage for allowing ourselves to tune in to our bodies. The participants will learn how to prop and align themselves so that they can practice at home. To read more about Svaroopa, go to http://www.masteryoga.org/contemplations/rama_contemplation.asp This study group is for adults. | |

This is ultimate low-tech! Every living being has a life force, or energy, the Chinese call qi or chi ("chee"). For people this energy runs along paths called meridians. When our energy and meridians are in balance, we feel our best. Places on the body where we can balance this energy are called acupressure points. Blocked or suppressed energy can result in feeling less than our best. Stress and injury account for a lot of interruptions to our energy flow. Acupressure is an easy, low-tech, always available way to balance our energy and help with a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms, including feeling tired or low energy handling an emotional upset needing to focus for a test or other activity calming mind and body easing symptoms for all kinds of physical conditions handling medications and antibiotics better helping digestion helping the skin helping glands function better, such as the thyroid, pituitary, and adrenals improving immunity pain relief for colds, breathing headaches, backaches, toothaches, stomachaches, eyestrain, and much more stress relief first-aid techniques much more than can be listed, because acupressure can affect any part of the body or mind in a positive way Come prepared to practice using acupressure both in the class and for a brief time daily at home, and to take notes on that practice.

| Instructor Provided Materials | Handouts containing background material on works being studied. | |
| Study Group Style | Lecture, Discussion, Activity | |
| Description | This is a continuation of Modern American Fiction and Fiction Classics, previously given on Wednesdays. We have expanded from "American" and have even done a few non-fiction works, hence the change in title. We generally read 6 or 7 books per semester. The titles are often those you would find on a typical high school reading list. They will include novels of various genres, and possibly short stories, plays, or memoirs. The focus of the group is on discussing the books. In addition to topics suggested by the subject matter, we also analyze the works for literary devices, do character studies, place the books in historical context and do background research on the authors. Discussion will also be informed by the use of literature guides. We often read background material aloud together during class time. There is sometimes other class preparation involved, for example when we do role playing or simulations. Expect to read approximately 200 pages per week. Note that although the reading level might be within the capacity of younger members, the subject matter is best suited for those who are teens and older. When in doubt, please consult with me. If any group members wish to write essays based on any of the books during the course of this study group, I am happy to review and critique these and work on revisions with you. Also, I am taking suggestions for books you would like to study. The list of books will be sent out a couple of weeks before the start of the semester so we can get started right away at our first session. If you want to get a better idea of the type of books we cover, please contact me and I will send you our lists from the last couple of years. --Betsy | |

| Description | This is a study group for those who really need to learn high-school math, but have not had such a great time with math in the past. The exact material to be covered will depend on the needs of the students, but the focus will be on what you need to know for tests like the SAT: elementary algebra and geometry, and how to use them to conquer those little demons known as "word problems". If anyone needs to review the trickier parts of arithmetic, like fractions and decimals, we can do that as well, but please try at least to have your multiplication tables memorized before starting this group! To keep the group from being unremittingly tedious, I also plan to discuss some of the odd and interesting bits of math that you probably won't find on standardized tests: dimensions (1, 2, 3, and more), infinities (yes, there are different infinities), fractals, and who knows what else? Because being able to do math is often as much a matter of practice as of understanding, you should expect to do several hours of work at home for each hour spent in class. If you really do the work, you should find that understanding actually grows out of the practice. | |

| Description | *Participants will* study criminal (and some civil) law and trial procedure as part of the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Mock Trial Program. Students should be prepared to: read actual case decisions, statutes, and the rules of civil/criminal procedure; help prepare the entire case for both the prosecution and the defense (including opening and closing statements, direct and cross-examinations); and role-play as attorneys and witnesses.
We begin on September 16th - There will be a general kickoff meeting for all the team members. During the first few weeks, new members will learn the basics of the court system and trial procedure, while returning members will have a quick refresher and be given more opportunity to hone their presentation skills. The case materials for this year's competition will be available in early November. More details will be provided as they become available.
Who may participate - This is a high-school level study group open to students who wish to participate and are able to handle the material. All team members will contribute during study group meetings and rehearsals. While not all members may be assigned roles on the competitive team (as attorneys, witnesses, or understudies), everyone will participate on the developmental team helping to prepare the case. (Please note that MA Bar Association Mock Trial rules only permit high school students, or homeschoolers enrolled at a high school level, to compete.)
We are building a serious competitive team - This requires a strong commitment from all the members, and the better we do in competition, the longer and more rewarding that commitment will be! Please do not sign up for this program unless you can commit to all the homework, the team meetings, and competition dates.
Homework - This course will often require several hours of homework per week, including reading, some writing, and some small group work, in preparation for the competitions.
Schedule:
We will do our best to coordinate with the needs of our team members and coaches, but attendance at all scheduled sessions and competitions is mandatory!
Study group meetings - Beginning September 16, we will meet at Voyagers on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Then during Voyagers' winter break (12/19/08 to 1/20/09) we will generally meet twice a week (Tuesday evenings plus another day TBD), with time off around the holidays.
Additional time commitments - As the competitions approach, additional practice times will be scheduled, as needed. Depending on how we do in competition, this may include dates during the February break (2/16/09 to 2/20/09), and even the April break (4/20/08 to 4/24/08).
Competitions - Voyagers will compete with at least three other Mock Trial teams on various weekday afternoons between mid-January and mid-February, and depending on our team's success, continue competing through March or May. Dates and locations will be set by the MA Bar Association and announced when the time approaches.

We'll look at plays from different times of the year but focus on the winter solstice tradition, as we prepare for our performance. We'll teach songs that accompany mumming, including calling-on songs for longsword dances. In conjunction with the history piece, we'll read through and perform bits of plays for each other. We'll also learn simple longsword figures. Our hope is to write an original mummers' play for Voyagers based on the traditions that the kids are learning in the study group. As with all Revels education projects, we hope that the Voyagers' mummers' play will become a yearly tradition for the community.

PLEASE NOTE: I do not believe age is relevant here, only ability and interest. Parents, please honestly assess your child's capabilities; if you have any reason to believe that there might be difficulties with any of the skills listed, expect to either be physically and mentally present to help your child, or choose a different activity. | Description | The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Our courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth, and is the key to our free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates. From the website: http://www.rad-systems.com/ From Cindy Hughes, the instructor: “We would run class time and physical practice for the first 6-7 classes and then have simulation where the girls practice what they learned in a realistic situation with a trained simulator. Class talk is basically about avoiding dangerous situations, what to do if you find yourself in a situation and safely get out of it, being aware of surroundings, etc. Our goal is that avoidance can be successful in at least 90% of the time to stay safe. The other 10% is the physical skills learned which are easy to remember, easy to administer and we give them enough to learn so that if one thing doesn't work, they have another tool they can draw upon. We do spend more than half the time with the physical skills and simulation seems to be everyone's favorite part of the program. We do request that students were comfortable clothes and sneakers to practice the physical drills. All state colleges in Massachusetts offer RAD classes on their campuses which I think is wonderful. I also bring all kinds of information that students are welcome to keep for their reference.” This study group is open to mothers also, on a space available basis. It is requested that students wear comfortable clothes and sneakers to practice the physical drills.

| Description | "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." ~Mahatma Ghandi This study group will encourage personal efforts towards positive change. Students will participate in a variety of community service activities on/off-site and reflect on the experiences in class through discussion, journaling, or activist videos created by the students (i.e. YouTube). We may view short documentaries as a preface to some service efforts. As we will occasionally be traveling outside of Voyagers, it is crucial that all partcipants are mature enough to be respectful of others. Volunteer efforts could include assisting in: The Food Project (food produce), Loaves and Fishes (food pantry), Rosie's Place (sanctuary for poor and homeless women and children), the Children's Hospital, book collections and literacy efforts, winter clothing collections, and others depending on the interests of the group. Students should be able to handle mature and sensitive discussions/dynamics. Hannah 18 Apr 2008 | |

| Description | Don't have time for three years of law school? Then take this study group to get an overview of the legal system and learn what really goes on in a courtroom. We will study some of the basic principles of the law, such as Tort Law (what constitutes an assault), Property and Real Estate (good fences make good neighbors), Contracts and Commercial Law (offer, acceptance AND consideration) and Constitutional Law (is there an express right to privacy?). Other areas of the law will be covered per student interest, including Family Law, Criminal Law, Environmental Law or Employment Law. The format will follow a two-step approach for each subject: first read case studies for homework and discuss the legal reasoning in one meeting to be followed by a mini mock trial in the next meeting. The differences between federal, state and municipal law will also be covered. No LSAT will be required!! | |

| Description | This is a course about self-discovery - what fascinates us, what motivates us, what intrigues us. We will explore these questions through a series of seminars, interviews and photography sessions. The students will identify individuals they would like to interview and subjects they would like to photograph. Then, in a supportive seminar format, we will work together to develop interview questions. The study group leader will work with the students to arrange interview time with subjects. We will also photograph subjects (people, places and things) and put all of our materials together into an audio visual presentation. The final product of the semester will (hopefully) be a podcast designed using Apple software. Students do not need to have their own laptop computers but it will be very helpful if each student has his or her own digital camera. The study group leader has one camera that she can lend to a student on specific days if s/he doesn't have access to a digital camera. The instructor will provide each student with a notebook for the study group as well as photocopied templates for interviews. Students will be required to read The Teenage Liberation Handbook by Grace Llewellyn over the summer in preparation for the first day of study group. The students do not need to own the book - a library copy is just fine. | |

| Skill Requirements/Prerequisites | Participants do NOT need to be Michaelangelo, to have any formal knowledge of how to draw, or to have any drawing skills at all. Loupe drawing is a learned skill, and we'll all come to it at our own level. Participants must commit to trying their best, to forgiving themselves if they make a "mistake," and to giving positive feedback to their peers. We can certainly all use work on that! Participants must be able to participate in a short, focused classroom discussion, to concentrate on their own work, and not be a distraction to other members of the group. Those who can't meet these requirements will be asked to leave for that day. BUT - you can sit or lie on the floor to draw if you'd rather not use the table. Participants must be willing to let ideas flow, and not to negatively judge the ideas of other participants. The wildest analogies are sometimes the most insightful. Ideas that are edited too soon become stale. Participants should be able to write words and short phrases without help in class. Spelling doesn't matter a bit - what matters is that the student can read her own writing later. The instructor will not be scribing for participants, although she can occasionally lend a helping hand. We won't do any extended, individual writing in class, and most written assignments for home will be optional. Participants must be respectful of the instructor and the other members of the study group. | |
| Book Title | I'm using The Private Eye to prepare, but families don't need to purchase a copy. | |
| ISBN | 0 - 9605434 - 1 - 4 | |
| Family Provided Materials | Additional specimens to work with, colored pencils if desired. | |
| Instructor Provided Materials | Hardbound, spiral notebooks with good quality paper for drawing, jeweler's loupes, pencils, and specimens to examine and draw. I'm planning for two loupes per participant, for they can be nested for 10X magnification. The loupes, notebooks and pencils will be cheaper if I purchase them in bulk for the kids. I'm estimating the cost of the loupes, notebooks and pencils at under $20 per child. I'll shop to keep the price lower if possible, and refund you. I expect to collect specimens myself, not to spend any money on them. Students will also gather specimens. | |

| Description | The Private Eye is a program of looking, drawing, and thinking by analogy. It provides a guide to developing an interdisciplinary mind, hands-on thinking skills, creativity and scientific literacy. (Won't that sound good on your report to your school district?) Using a jeweler's loupe, (a small, 5X magnification tool), students will examine objects closely, make enlarged drawings of the objects, and ask questions about what they see. "What does it remind me of?" "What else does it look like?" "If it reminds me of that, might it function in the same way?" We'll use some of the most important skills used in science and the arts: looking closely, thinking by analogy, changing scale, and theorizing. The written analogies will become the "bones for poems," or the beginnings of short stories or naturalist essays. We'll do some group writing in class, and provide ideas for expanding our notes to writing at home. Is it a science study group? An art study group? A writing study group? Yes to all of these. Most of all, the Private Eye is fun. (Note to parents: I'd like another adult in the room if the group is full. I'm working on it.) | |

| Description | I'll be using the workbook "Hands On Geography for Grades 6-8". Here is the link for its description (just cut & paste into your browser): http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/Hands-On+Geography+Grades+6-8/014898/1208017816-1999156 The workbook is divided into three sections. The first focuses on improving map skills and understanding the five themes of geography (location, place, human/environment interaction, movement, and regions). Basic matching, fill in the blank, short answer, and labeling worksheets are provided with maps to improve skills and enhance basic knowledge. In the next section, a variety of fun, hands-on activities are provided to reinforce different geographic concepts. The projects are usually easy to complete and not very time consuming. Examples include making an edible map, constructing a paper plate fact quiz about countries, and decorating a cereal box with information about a chosen country. The third section of each book is full of charts, graphs, and diagrams that children will encounter on standardized testing. Reading and using charts is explained, and several multiple choice sections are included so children learn how to read charts and gather information from them. | |

| Description | This is for true beginning writers. Typical 1st and 2nd grade stuff. We will create short non-fiction stories from children's own experiences, illustrate them and share with group. Stories might be as short as 10 sentences, one to three per page w/ an illustration. Spelling is not important at all. I will NOT be transcribing or helping with spelling--kids must write on their own. Depending on the makeup of the group, we may also work a little on some basic reading/spelling skills, like having a "sound of the day" and identifying words that fit. Might work a little on letter formation. | |
