| Description | The primary objective of this study group is to gain familiarity with mechanical engineering concepts through experience and observation. Considering the definition of work (force x distance) and Newton's Laws, we will focus on how simple machines and structural mechanics are used in design. Largely through building with K'NEX, straws and other household items, we will investigate and gain an intuitive understanding of many structural mechanics concepts. We will also discuss Newton's Laws of Motion, where applicable. There will be little homework. Lecture will be limited and engaging, using multi-media presentations (Powerpoint, video clips, etc.). Some classes will incorporate mini-whiteboards, where participants will record their own answer to some question/answer segments. Collection, recording, interpetation and graphing of data By the end of this study group you will be able to identify and understand the major design criteria for Beam, Truss, Cantilever, Bascule, Arc, Suspension and Cable-stayed bridges. You will also be able to understand the use of pullies, inclined planes, levers, and gears in design. And you will have a grasp of Newton's Three Laws of Motion. Most important, you will have a greater appreciation of the physical laws which govern our world. |
