Description %META:TOPICINFO{author="LauraHowell" date="1259934271" format="1.0" version="1.8"}% Join us as we explore the power of reading through great novels and authors such as:

  • THE SECRET GARDEN (Burnett)

  • THE WITCH OF BLACKBIRD POND (Speare)

  • THE SECRET ORDER OF THE GUMSTREET GIRLS (Primavera/Delany)

  • HOLES (Hiaasen)

  • AL CAPONE DOES MY SHIRTS (Choldenko)

  • A LONG WAY TO CHICAGO (Peck)

  • JOSHUA’S SONG (Harlow)

  • ELLA ENCHANTED (Levine)

  • THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS (Boyne)

  • MY ANTONIA (Cather)

I plan to include at least a few non-American authors. Please see this website for some of the possibilities: Teens Around the World Fiction: http://www.carnegielibrary.org/teens/books/

We will make our final selections based on the makeup of the group and their preferences, what they have already read and availability of the books. Participants should be able to manage reading approximately 150 pages per week. I plan to use the Harkness Method (reader-centered classroom with no formal lectures from a leader) in our discussions which will require that all participants do their best to get the reading done as their input will be crucial to the group’s learning. We will work on sharing and understanding our personal responses to the stories and why and how the authors’ succeed (or fail?) in making us think and feel certain things. We will develop discipline for finding details in the texts to support our opinions. I also hope we will have time to incorporate some art and acting into our group as well as “journaling.” Some writing will be required but the requirements will be modified for individual participants.

Readings will be age-appropriate in content but challenging. We will take on some serious topics but will avoid books which are too disturbing or mature in their content.
